How soon should children get an orthodontic evaluation?

Most of us imagine that braces aren’t something that we need to worry about until our children reach adolescence.   It might come as a surprise to learn that Molen Orthodontics actually encourage parents to seek an initial orthodontic evaluation by the age of Seven.  The reason for this is that we can evaluate whether or not the child will need orthodontic treatment.  Teeth can certainly be moved at any age but we recommend beginning treatment early to ensure better results and avoid development of any serious problems later.

Some of the problems that early orthodontic treatment can help prevent include:

  • Bite issues
  • Jaw problems
  • Too much crowding
  • Space between teeth
  • Portruding teeth

Some of these issues can stem from thumb sucking habits as well as early or late loss of primary teeth.  Seeking early orthodontic treatment can prevent the need for orthodontic treatment later in life.

Many parents wonder if early treatment can prevent the need for braces later.  The great news is that early treatment can help prevent more serious issues from developing as well as making future treatment more simple.  Because all the permanent teeth have not erupted yet during early treatment, their fial alignment may not need to be corrected.  Normally a shorter comprehensive phase of treatment in the teenage years after the permanent teeth are in completes the correction but in some cases further orthodontic treatment may not be necessary.
