The Molen Halloween Checklist: How Many Can You Check Off Before Halloween? πŸŽƒ

Halloween is about more than candy and costumes. It is one of those times of year when families have plenty of opportunities to slow down, get creative, and make a few memories together.

So this October, we have a challenge for you:

How many can your family check off before Halloween?

From pumpkin patches and movie nights to neighborhood walks and spooky crafts, we put together a family-friendly Halloween checklist with ideas for kids of all ages. Pick your favorites, try something new, and see how many you can complete before October 31!

The Family Halloween Checklist

☐ Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Make an afternoon of it! Pick out pumpkins, take a few family photos, enjoy a fall treat, and let everyone choose their own pumpkin to take home.

☐ Carve or Decorate Pumpkins

You do not have to be a professional pumpkin carver to have fun with this one. Try traditional jack-o’-lanterns, silly faces, spooky designs, or let younger kids decorate their pumpkins with paint, stickers, or markers.

☐ Have a Halloween Movie Night

Put on pajamas, make some popcorn, turn down the lights, and pick a family-friendly Halloween movie. You could even let each family member choose one movie throughout the month.

For younger kids, try something silly and spooky. Older kids might enjoy a classic Halloween favorite.

☐ Make a Halloween Treat

Spend an afternoon in the kitchen making something festive together. Think Halloween cookies, caramel apples, popcorn balls, or a fun snack board.

And if your family has a Molen patient in treatment, remember to keep braces-friendly options in mind when choosing your treats.

☐ Go on a Halloween Decoration Walk

Take a walk around your neighborhood and see how many decorated houses you can find.

Make it a game by creating categories such as:

  • Spookiest house
  • Funniest decoration
  • Best pumpkins
  • Best lights
  • Most creative display

Bonus points if your family creates its own awards!

☐ Visit a Trunk-or-Treat

Trunk-or-treat events are a fun alternative to traditional trick-or-treating and are often designed with families and younger children in mind.

Check local community calendars, schools, churches, and organizations for events happening near you.

☐ Make Halloween Crafts

Set up a Halloween craft afternoon and let the kids get creative. Make paper ghosts, decorate pumpkins, create spooky garlands, or make homemade decorations for the house.

You could even turn the finished crafts into decorations you bring out every Halloween.

☐ Have a Family Costume Planning Night

Instead of waiting until October 30 to figure out everyone’s costume, make costume planning an activity.

Will your family coordinate? Go completely different directions? Recreate a favorite movie? Let everyone choose their own?

There are no wrong answers.

☐ Take a Halloween Family Photo

Pick a fun location, put everyone in costume, or simply take a cozy fall family photo.

It does not have to be perfect. In fact, the candid ones are usually the favorites later.

☐ Have a Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of things to find around the neighborhood or at home.

Look for:

  • A black cat
  • A pumpkin
  • A witch
  • A skeleton
  • Orange lights
  • A ghost
  • A spider
  • A house with a funny decoration

See who can find everything first!

☐ Make Halloween Cards for Someone You Love

Halloween does not have to be all about getting treats. Have the kids make spooky or silly cards for grandparents, teachers, friends, neighbors, or someone who could use a little extra smile.

☐ Have a Cozy Fall Breakfast

Start one October morning with pancakes, waffles, cinnamon rolls, hot chocolate, or another family favorite.

Add a little Halloween flair with pumpkin-shaped pancakes or festive toppings.

☐ Read a Spooky Story Together

Turn off the lights, grab some blankets, and read a Halloween story together.

For younger kids, choose something silly and not too scary. Older kids might enjoy taking turns reading a spooky story aloud.

☐ Do Something Kind for Someone Else

Make kindness part of your Halloween traditions. Leave a surprise treat for a neighbor, donate to a local organization, help clean up a community space, or simply do something thoughtful for someone else.

A little kindness can go a long way.

☐ Go Trick-or-Treating

Of course, no Halloween checklist would be complete without it!

Whether your family spends the evening walking around the neighborhood or visiting a local event, make it a night to remember.

And if your child wears braces, remember to stick with orthodontist-approved treats and avoid especially hard, sticky, or chewy candy that can damage brackets or wires.

Make Your Own Halloween Family Tradition

The best part of a Halloween checklist is that you do not have to complete everything.

Maybe your family loves pumpkin carving but could skip the crafts. Maybe movie night becomes your favorite tradition. Maybe the neighborhood decoration walk turns into something you do every October.

Pick a few activities that fit your family and make them your own.

And if you have young children, let them help choose what goes on the list. Giving kids a say can make even simple activities feel like a big event.

Don’t Forget Your Smile

While Halloween is definitely a time for fun, October is also a good reminder to keep your family’s regular health and orthodontic routines on track.

If your child has braces, make sure they know which Halloween treats are safe and which ones are better left off the menu. Keeping up with brushing, flossing, and regular orthodontic appointments can help keep their treatment moving in the right direction.

If your child has not started orthodontic treatment yet, Halloween can also be a good time to check one more thing off your family’s to-do list.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up by age 7. An early visit does not necessarily mean your child needs braces. In many cases, it simply gives an orthodontist the opportunity to monitor how their teeth and jaws are developing.

At Molen Orthodontics, we offer a complimentary consultation for families who want to learn more about their child’s orthodontic development and whether treatment may be appropriate now or later.
