What is dentofacial orthopedics?
While orthodontics is focused on tooth alignment and bite correction, dentofacial orthopedics is concerned with how the facial bones grow, especially the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible).
To achieve that beautiful Molen Signature Smile recognized throughout the community, we blend orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics into a comprehensive treatment plan, taking every detail into consideration.
This allows us to optimize both the aesthetics and functionality of your smile to create a harmonious, proportional appearance.
Who can benefit from dentofacial orthopedics?
Dentofacial orthopedic treatment is best completed when the jaw bones and facial bones are still developing, during childhood and early orthodontic treatment. This allows us to work with the natural development of the smile and guide the jaw bones into alignment as they’re growing.
Typically beginning with phase 1 orthodontics around the ages of 7-10, we can create a custom treatment plan that may include an orthodontic appliance, like a palatal expander, to widen the upper jaw and encourage proper lower jaw development. This may then be followed by phase 2 orthodontics, which involves aligning the teeth with braces or Invisalign®.
Every child develops at a different rate, and every smile is unique. You or your child’s treatment plan will be personalized to your needs, and we only suggest necessary treatment.
