Surgical Orthodontics
Corrective Jaw Surgery
At Molen Orthodontics, our goal is to prevent the need for jaw surgery through early orthodontic treatment and comprehensive, custom treatment plans.
Most conditions can be treated with orthodontic appliances, advanced Damon™ braces and/or Invisalign®, but more severe cases, or ones that begin when the bones are done developing in the adult years, may require surgical orthodontics.

What is surgical orthodontics?
What are the benefits of corrective jaw surgery?
If surgical orthodontics is necessary to treat your condition, it’ll allow us to reposition your jaw bones and create a healthy alignment and bite position. This, followed by orthodontic treatment to align the teeth, can restore your bite function for better chewing, easier sleeping and breathing, and can significantly enhance your appearance.
Our goal with any treatment is to create the Molen Signature Smile — a beautiful, natural-looking, full smile that matches the curvature of your lips and complements your unique facial features.
Early Intervention to Avoid Jaw Surgery
To help prevent the need for corrective jaw surgery, it’s important to bring your child in for their first orthodontic check-up at age 7. One of our experienced orthodontists will thoroughly examine your little one’s smile, jaws, palate and airway to determine whether jaw issues are present.
If we find that the upper or lower jaw bone is too narrow, or misaligned, we’ll create a comprehensive treatment plan that may include an orthodontic appliance – like a palatal expander or space maintainers – to support proper jaw development.
How does orthognathic surgery work?
Jaw surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and typically completed in a hospital.
If we determine that orthognathic surgery is necessary, we will refer you to an experienced surgeon. The surgery may take a few hours, and generally requires a two-week recovery period post-surgery. We advise that you take time off of work or school to allow for a complete recovery.
Once your jaws have healed, your Molen orthodontist will reassess your bite to ensure that the treatment was effective. You’ll typically undergo orthodontic treatment after surgery for the next 6 to 12 months, depending on your case.
If you or your child requires jaw surgery, we’ll explain the process to you in detail and ensure that you’re comfortable every step of the way.
