Traveling With Braces or Clear Aligners During the Holidays? Here’s What You Should Know | Molen Orthodontics

Traveling With Braces or Clear Aligners During the Holidays? Here’s What You Should Know

If you’re traveling during the holidays and you or your child has braces or clear aligners, you’re probably wondering:

What should I pack?

What if something breaks while I’m gone?

Is it okay to travel mid-treatment?

We get these questions all the time at Molen Orthodontics, especially during the holidays. Let’s walk you through exactly what to expect and how to travel confidently without putting your smile at risk.

Can You Travel With Braces or Clear Aligners?

Yes, absolutely!
Traveling during orthodontic treatment is completely safe as long as you’re prepared.

The most important thing is keeping your routine as normal as possible and having a plan if something unexpected happens. Most issues can be temporarily managed at home until you return or contact us.

What Should I Pack When Traveling With Braces or Aligners?

Think of this as your orthodontic travel kit. We always recommend packing these items:

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Floss or floss threaders
  • Interdental brushes (especially helpful for braces)
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Your aligner case (never travel without this!)
  • Extra rubber bands (if you use them)
  • Retainer or aligner cleaning supplies

👉 If you’re not sure how to use wax, rubber bands, or cleaning tools, we have quick, easy-to-follow instructional videos on the Molen Orthodontics website you can watch before you leave (or even while you’re traveling).

What Foods Should I Avoid While Traveling With Braces?

Holiday travel often means snacks, airport food, and parties so this is a big one.

If you have braces, try to avoid:

Sticky candy (caramels, taffy, candy canes)

Popcorn

Hard nuts

Crunchy chips or pretzels

If you’re wearing clear aligners:

Always remove aligners before eating

Never eat or drink anything besides water while wearing them

Brush or rinse before putting aligners back in

What If a Bracket Breaks or a Wire Is Poking While I’m Away?

This is one of the most common issues that arise and the good news is, most orthodontic issues are not true emergencies.

Here’s what you can do right away:

Use orthodontic wax to cover poking wires

Rinse with warm salt water for soreness

Avoid foods that could make it worse

We also have step-by-step instructional videos on our website showing exactly how to manage common issues safely at home.

If you’re ever unsure, just reach out. We’d rather answer a quick question than have you stress.

What Happens If I Lose an Aligner or Retainer While Traveling?

It happens more often than you’d think, usually because aligners get wrapped in napkins and thrown away.

If this happens:

Do not skip wearing aligners altogether

Wear your previous aligner unless we tell you otherwise

Contact our office as soon as possible for guidance

Our team can help you decide what to do next and whether a replacement is needed.

Should I Contact My Orthodontist While I’m on Vacation?

Yes, especially if something doesn’t feel right.

You should contact us if:

  • You’re in pain that doesn’t improve
  • A wire or bracket is causing ongoing irritation
  • An appliance breaks
  • You lose an aligner or retainer

One thing families appreciate about Molen Orthodontics is that we’re accessible, responsive, and prepared for real life, including holidays and travel.

How Can I Prevent Problems Before I Go?

This is my favorite question—because prevention makes everything easier.

Before you travel:
✅ Keep up with brushing and flossing
✅ Follow food guidelines
✅ Pack your orthodontic kit
✅ Bookmark our instructional video page
✅ Save our office number in your phone

A little prep goes a long way.
