What to Expect

If you have been thinking about getting braces for awhile, but don’t know what to expect, Molen Orthodontics has the answers! Commonly, we hear questions like “How will my lifestyle change?”, “Will braces hurt?”, “Will I be able to eat the foods I love?” and “How will I maintain my oral care routine?” among others. We want you to be confident of your choice when you choose Molen Orthodontics, which is why we’re more than happy to provide you with clear answers to all of your questions.

Choosing orthodontic treatment is a major investment in your appearance and health, and Molen Orthodontics is committed to helping our clients get the most out of the processand that starts at your FREE consultation! No matter how complex your needs, your age, or your orthodontic goals, our doctors will take the time to discuss all of your treatment options with you and will perform a systematic review of your skeletal, periodontal (gums), teeth, occlusion (bite), and jaw joints at your initial visit.

Comfortable Treatment Options

To make your treatment as comfortable and efficient as possible, Molen Orthodontics chooses to use Damon system braces. The state-of-the-art designs of Damon braces allow the teeth to be moved into position with much less pressure than with traditional braces. Your teeth may feel a little sore after an adjustment to your braces or the insertion of a new aligner, but this is temporary and can be treated with a small amount of over-the-counter pain medication. We find that for most of our patients after a regular adjustment appointment the soreness peaks 12 hours later and fades within 48 hours.

We also use 3-D x-rays, also known as cone-beam volumetric tomography, on select patients when additional diagnostic information is necessary to render a complete treatment plan. This cutting-edge technology allows us to view the location of teeth in 3-D, ensuring your treatment plan is highly precise.

Changes to Facial Structure

When you choose Molen Orthodontics for your treatment, any changes to your facial structure will only be positive ones. When you first visit, we carefully examine your facial aesthetics, the shape of your palate and jaw, the placement and fullness of your lips and cheeks, and how your teeth support them. We are committed to not just straightening your teeth, but to enhancing your overall appearance so that you can look and feel your best.

The extraction of healthy adult teeth can negatively impact your overall facial structures, which is why we avoid extracting healthy adult teeth as much as possible. Instead, we customize your orthodontic treatment to give you a wide, natural smile. We also pay meticulous attention to ensuring that your cheeks and lips are well-supported, preserving their youthful fullness and avoiding the flattened or sunken look that can take place with less vigilant orthodontic treatment.

Changes to Food & Diet

Once orthodontic treatment begins, there will be certain foods that you will need to avoid. These are foods that can easily get stuck in your braces, or hard, sticky foods that could cause damage and require an emergency repair appointment. To make sure you never have to play guessing games with your food, we will provide you with a comprehensive list of foods to avoid. In general, however, we don’t want you to have to make major changes to your lifestyle or the foods you enjoy eating. A healthy dose of common sense and careful eating is usually sufficient to keep your braces from becoming loose.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping your teeth and gums clean during orthodontic treatment is of vital importance. The last thing you would want when your braces come off is to find that there has been gum disease or tooth decay developing during your orthodontic treatment due to insufficient oral hygiene care at home.

Patients should brush their teeth four times a day with a soft toothbrush: once after each meal, and once before bed. Damon braces make oral care much easier, as the wires are not required to be held in place by plaque-attracting colored rubber ties. We will also spend lots of one-on-one time with you at your first appointment, taking the time to review specific tips and tricks for keeping your teeth and braces looking and feeling their best. In addition, we will always provide refills on your oral hygiene supplies at each visit in order to provide you with the tools you need to keep your smile looking fantastic!
