Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene is a New Year’s Resolution You Can Keep

It’s a new year, and many of us have made resolutions to improve our lives–eat healthier, go to the gym, or quit a bad habit. These things all have something in common; they make us healthier and more confident. If being healthier and more confident is one of your big goals this year, developing a good oral hygiene routine is a simple way to improve your health and feel better about your smile in 2017.

While some New Year’s resolutions require endless hours of dedication, developing good oral practices take just a few minutes every day, and you should already be doing some of them!

Brushing Your Teeth

Hopefully, we don’t have to tell you that this is important. One of the most important parts of an oral hygiene regimen is brushing your teeth two times a day for two minutes each time. Brush your tongue at the end to help remove bacteria that can cause bad breath. The best tool for the job is a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits in your mouth well. It is also important to remember to replace your toothbrush every three or four months, sooner if the bristles are damaged. Using a worn-out toothbrush reduces the effectiveness, so check to make sure yours is still in good condition.

Flossing Your Teeth

This should be another no-brainer, but there is evidence that people aren’t flossing as much as they should be. Make it part of your resolution to not skip the flossing, because a toothbrush can’t reach the tight spots in between your teeth like floss can. Use 18 inches of floss and gently guide the floss between your teeth. Remember, you only need to floss the teeth you want to keep!

Rinsing Your Mouth

Using a mouth rinse after you have brushed and flossed is a good way to end your morning and night routine. An over-the-counter or prescription antiseptic rinse will help to reduce the build-up of film and gingivitis.
